What are lab tests and when does your pet need them?
Lab tests are laboratory analyses that give detailed information about your pet's internal health. They can detect problems (kidney, liver, endocrine) at an early stage, before visible symptoms appear.
They aren't only for when illness is suspected: they're a preventive medicine tool. Done regularly, they help you stay ahead and avoid bigger complications.

Frequently asked questions.
When should I have tests done on my pet?
An annual check-up is recommended for adult dogs and cats, even if they seem healthy. For puppies, kittens and older animals it's best to do them more often. Also before any surgery, or if you notice loss of appetite, vomiting, tiredness or behavioural changes.
How long do the results take?
We have our own lab, so many results are ready the same day. This speeds up the diagnosis and lets us start treatment as soon as possible if needed. Some more specific tests are sent to an external laboratory and take a little longer.
Are the tests painful?
No. Taking blood or collecting urine are quick, safe and minimally invasive procedures. Your pet may feel a slight discomfort, like we do with a blood test, but there's no risk involved.
Why are tests important before surgery?
The pre-anaesthetic blood test confirms your pet is fit for the anaesthesia. It checks how the vital organs are working, the immune status and clotting, which reduces the risks during and after the operation. We recommend it especially for those over 7 years old.
Should I bring my pet in fasting?
In some cases yes, such as for blood biochemistry, where fasting for 8 to 12 hours is recommended so the results are reliable. We'll always give you the specific guidance before the test.
