- Difficulty breathing: Very fast breathing, open mouth, bluish or pale gums.
- Heavy bleeding: That doesn't stop after several minutes of pressure.
- Seizures: Especially if they recur or last more than a couple of minutes.
- Can't urinate: Above all in male cats: tries and can't. It's a life-threatening emergency.
- Poisoning: Has eaten something toxic (chocolate, xylitol, poison, a plant) or touched a processionary caterpillar.
- Heatstroke: Intense non-stop panting, staggering, vomiting, on hot days.
- Swollen, hard belly: With unsuccessful attempts to vomit: possible gastric torsion.
- Serious trauma: Hit by a car, a fall or a heavy blow, even if it looks fine on the outside.

At Rincón de Loix Veterinary Clinic we handle emergencies during our opening hours (Mon-Fri 10:00-19:00 and Sat 10:00-13:30). We are not a 24-hour service. Outside those hours, for a life-threatening emergency you should go to a 24-hour veterinary emergency centre; 112 and the College of Veterinarians of Alicante (ICOVAL) can tell you the nearest one.
What do I do if my pet has an emergency outside your hours?
If it's a life-threatening emergency (difficulty breathing, bleeding that won't stop, seizures, can't urinate, poisoning or heatstroke), go to a 24-hour emergency service. You can call 112 or ICOVAL (+34 965 24 68 03) to be directed to the nearest on-call centre. As soon as we open, we can follow up the case and continue treatment.
